BEKASI, Indonesia – Alhamdulillah, the number of Muslims in Papua is rising, on Sunday (19/2/2012) the chief of the Asmat tribe and his family declared the shahadah to embrace Islam. The chief of the Asmat tribe, named Sinansius Kayimpter, along with his wife, Agnes Atem and son, Ruben Siwir declared their shahadah at Masjid Darussalam, Jati Bening, Bekasi.
The solemn ceremony was assisted by Ustadz Fadhlan Garamatan and the Imam of Masjid Istiqlal, Ali Hanayiah. The process of the pledge was so poignant, with a stammer, Sinansius pronounced the two kalimah of shahadah. Followed by his wife, Agnes and his son, Ruben. For Ruben, he had difficulty in uttering smoothly the two kalimah of shahadah. Due to being so touched perhaps, Ruben could not withhold himself from crying. He then had to pause from uttering the two kalimah of shahadah.
After the shahadah, the congregation right away cried the kalimah of takbir “Alhamdulillah Allahu Akbar,” and the three people from the Asmat tribe decided to change their names. Sinansius changed his name to Umar Abdullah Kayimter, his wife changed her name to Aisyah Khaerunissa Atem and their son becomes Salim Abdullah Siwir.
After the declaration of the two kalimah of shahadah was done, the ceremony was followed by the signing of the certificate of conversion to Islam. The ceremony was closed with the granting of gifts for Mu'alafs (new Muslims) and three Umrah tickets from Masjid Darussalam's Council of Welfare jama'ah.
According to Ustadz Fadlan, to this day, about 221 tribes in Papua have embraced Islam. The number of citizens in each tribe varies, ranging from hundreds to thousands. If averaged out to a thousand for each tribe, then the hard work of Ustadz Fadlan has already Islamized 220 thousands people in the rural of Papua. Subhanallah!
Re-marriage
After the announcement of the change of names, the event was continued with re-marrying Umar with his wife. It was done in order to solidify the intention of both partners to become a Muslim couple.
The Imam of Masjid Istiqlal, Ali Hanafiyah then acted as the wali hakim (magistrate guardian) of Aisyah, receiving the ijab Kabul (marriage covenant) from Umar. The atmosphere was so solemn. Proud smiles continued to be seen on Umar's face. Especially that the wali nikah (marriage guardian) and the jama'ah pronounced the marriage as “sah (valid)”.
“Insha Allah, by being re-married, the hope is that this family will become a Muslim family that always obtain the ridha (pleasure) of Allah SWT,” Ali said.
His Son Already A Huffaz (Memorizer of Qur'an)
Umar's son, Muhammad Hatta decided to embrace Islam a few years ago and now that of his son has become a Huffaz (Memorizer of Qur'an).
It was from there that Umar notices changes when someone embraces Islam. “In the former faith, there had been no change on him. But after embracing Islam, there were noticeable changes, like the many young Asmat people who study outside of their territory,” Fadhlan said.
Due to that, Fadhlan is optimistic that the shi'ar (symbols) of Islam in East Indonesia, or in Papua to be exact, will continue to grow. He believes that Papua will become the centre of Islamic development in East Indonesia.
“Actually it not easy for us to exercise the activity of da'wah. The presence of rejection is natural. As a da'ie, barriers and obstacles of any kind are to be faced with tolerations, da'wah must be managed well. Insha Allah, the result would also be well,” he said.
Looking ahead, Fadhlan said that the people of the Asmat tribe themselves will play the important role in developing the shi'ar of Islam. Currently, there are 20 youths who are studying Qur'an in Demak and Yogyakarta. When they have completed, they will share the task to continue da'wah that has been exercised over the years.
“There is always a challenge. But nothing to fear, Allah SWT is with those who have noble intentions. Our task is still a long way ahead,” he concluded.
Needing the Guidance and Attention of the Ummah
Ali Hanafiyah said that from the 1980's, there had people from the Asmat tribe who embraced Islam. However, the absence of mentors, as though made the Muslim Asmats neglected.
“Those people embraced Islam and then received the news coverage from the media. But after that, there was no on-going guidance, as a result they did not live Islam in kaffah,” Ali said in his advice to the family of Umar who has just declared the shahadah at Masjid Darussalam.
Ali said that it is the responsibility of the Muslims to collectively provide attention and guidance to the Muslim Asmats. The Muslims must follow the example of the Prophet SAW when educating the sahabahs such as Abu Bakar, Umar bin Khattab and Uthman bin Affan.
“The Prophet SAW Islamized the city of Makkah by approaching the leaders of the tribes of the city. And then he shaped Makkah into the Centre of the propagation of Islam,” Ali said.
Therefore, according to Ali, soon the tribe of Asmat can become the central propagators of Islam in Papua. He believes that the entrance of Islam into Papua will bring changes in the region. “We will make Papua become more dignified,” he said.
Chief of Asmat Tribe Ready to Propagate Islam in Papua
Sinansius Kayimter AKA Umar Abdullah Kayimter admitted that he is ready to spread the risaalah (message) of Islam to his clans from amongst the Asmat tribe.
For that, he will, without delay, get to know Islam up-close and personal. “I will try to introduce Islam to my people there,” Umar Abdullah said.

Shia'ah Scourge in Yemen Part 2
Part 1: Grassroots
Part 2: Political interfering mascarading as assistance
Higher level operations being carried out by Shia'ah Iranian backed groups/individuals are aimed at political leaders and influencial popular people.
It has been reported widely that at least 30 parliamentarians are on an Iranian payroll. These parliamentarians are from all parties.
Iranian financial backers are particularly interested in exploiting the south of Yemen and use the separatist movement as a tool to lever up an entry into the country.
The Iranian funds have targeted Sufi Shaikhs as well as exiled separatists such as Ali Al-Baidh the President of South Yemen before unification. Iran has been staging a sort of proxy war by taking advantage of the problems and needs of the people in the South and creating strong hatred for Saudi Arabia for not helping their separatist cause. In some popular demonstrations in the south, Yemenis were equipped with signs by these Iranian activists carrying slogans such as, "Yemeni people against Saudi intervention."
In the Yemeni military, army leaders expelled from their posts for being Houthis or Houthi sympathisers have been cashed up by Iranian sources to caryy out military operations when requested to. This is evident in the ongoing conflicts around Dammaj (Sa'ada province)where the Dar al Hadith Salafi Centre is located, as well as other areas of the province, Amran, Hajjah and Jawf. Houthis have been sabotaging polling stations and electoral offices ahead of tomorrows presidential election (21/2/12).
Why is Iran interested in getting into a basket case Yemen?
The basket case aspect will diminish as they buy up support and/or lock people into relationships due to the funding process.
In the past Iran has wanted to invest in Yemen, especially due to Yemen's strategic position on the Red Sea and Mandab strait which opens up into the Gulf of Aden. Previously the exPresident's son Ahmad Ali refused all Iranian backed bids and was praised by Saudi Arabia for doing so.
By getting involved in Yemen, Iran can also wage proxy war against Saudi Arabia and American interests in the country. In regard to the wars in Sa'ada between the Yemeni government forces and Houthi militants, Saudi Arabia openly supported the Yemen military effort to quell the Houthi uprising. The 5th Sa'ada war was notable as Saudi Arabia funded Ali Abdullah Saleh to "wipe the Houthis off the map." And in the 6th Sa'ada war Saudi Arabia provided infantry and air strikes. They had no choice in some of the matter because the war did cross over the border, but their air strikes were on the Yemeni side of the line.
It is widely known that Iran supports the Houthis, although the Houthis deny it. Recently the US ambassador to Yemen mentioned that it was a pity about the Iranian underhanded intervention in the elections, to which the Houthis howled fowl - that they don't get funded by Iran. But denial is common place in Yemen - Wallah, Mish Ana (I swear its not me!)

Shia'ah Scourge in Yemen Part 1
Buying the Grassroots
I was given a sticker by one of my students and I liked it. It said in Arabic, "Allahu Akbar, Death to America, Death to Israel, Allah curse the Jews, Allah make Islam victorious". I put the sticker on my admin folder and thought nothing more of it until some students came up to me and asked me if I knew what that sticker was really about. I read them the sticker in Arabic and translated it and asked what was wrong with it and they replied, "That sticker is being given out by the Houthis". So I peeled the sticker off my folder.
That is the thing, anyone who says such words will have some pull on the Yemeni people becuase those sentiments are common. So people start leaning towards the Houthis without even knowing the corrupt aqida of the Shiah Houthis, just because they say these tough words. And the Houthis have been actively calling Yemenis to their cause in Change Square, in Universities, in schools...
I decided to investigate the issue further and found an Iranian thumb in many pies.
Iran is stoking the fires of fitnah between the non-Shiah groups of Yemen in an attempt to create divisions and infighting between these groups and weaken them in the face of Shia'ah groups such as the militant Houthis and the Ansar Allah political party.
The Shia'ah Iranian funded dawa operatives are working multi-level operations from grass-roots and up.
Inside the Freedom and Change Squares in Sana'a, Hudaida, Marib, Aden, Taiz and possibly others, hired hands have been busy creating dissention amongst the revolutionary groups. In Change Square Sana'a it is well known that Sunni practicing revolutionaries have been fighting against the blantant Houthi dawa. The Houthis have been freely passing out their books. When Sunnah groups have tried distributing their books Square authorities have banned it. Any violence between "Salafis" and Houthis have quickly been blamed on Eman University Students.
Other grassroot activities happening in private universities in Sana'a include targeting weak or vulnerable and Islamically ignorant youth by offering them a step up in life. Offers (always done on the quiet, it is not open and is invitation only) of money to help a youth marry, a house, a car are attractive. The catch; unaware ignorant youth signs an agreement to side with his benefactors in situations of violence or turmoil.
In al-Jaraf area an Islamic Centre funded by Iranian sources offers free meals to poor passers-by, which is a good thing but once fed the often illiterate diners sign a form and the more of these forms signed the more funding the centre gets to feed more and propogate their ideology.

Houthi Post 2
Increasing violent clashes continued on Sunday evening between Shiite al-Houthi rebels and Sunni tribal armed men in the northern Yemeni province of Hajjah, leaving at least 30 killed.
"After the short-lived fragile ceasefire agreement has been broken, fierce clashes occurred in Ahm and Kashir districts, Hajjah, leaving at least 30 killed and many others wounded from the two sides," tribal dignitary told Yemen Post.
Al-Houthis have reportedly prevented the tribal mediation members, which was formed of tribal chiefs in the area, from supervising the implementation of the signed agreement, which was struck late last week, stirring up enrage among the chiefs that they accused al-Houthis of not making good on their promises.
Abdullah Wahban, a member in the tribal committee, expressed his regret and sorrow that the ceasefire has been breached by al-Houthis as they carried out some offenses in the past two days on some Sunni-held posts in Ahm and Kashir areas.
"Attacking and preventing the tribal mediation committee from resuming its job comes as an evidence of al-Houthis' usual behavior of not abiding by any agreement, " Zaid Arjash, the official spokesman for the Sunni tribal alliance, said.
"Houthis have reinforced their fighting units in Hajjah with more heavy weapons and professional snipers," Arjash added.
Al-Houthi office has declined to comment on the matter.
The sectarian clashes broke out in Saddah and Hajjah provinces when al-Houthis tried to expand their dominance in the area.
Yemeni government has accused Iran of backing Houthis in 2008, resulting in deterioration of relationships between the two countries.

Munafiqeen Executed
I don't know much about Ansar al-Sharia. When I first heard of them I suspected them to be a government invention. WHo knows? Maybe they are.
This article appeared in Yemen Post website.
Ansar al-Sharia, a group affiliated to al-Qaeda in Yemen, has delivered the capital punishment to three of its followers suspected of being spies for Yemeni government, Saudi Arabia, and United States of America, the group announced in its website late on Sunday.
The three spies, who allegedly have provided US Intelligence with vital information that led to the killing of high-ranking leaders of al-Qaeda in the past months, were executed on Saturday morning in the southern restive provinces of Abyan and Shabwa after their written confessions were handed out to the residents in the area, al-Qaeda stronghold in Abyan, eyewitnesses told Yemen Post.
The bodies of three alleged spies-- Hasan Naji Hassan, Saleh al-Jamli, and Ramzi al-Riqi-- were then cut to pieces and put on different parts of Ja'ar town, Abyan and Azan district of Shabwa as a warning to anyone who might think of cooperating with al-Qaeda enemies, particularly the United states, the eyewitnesses added.
As of late, Yemen based al-Qaeda, which is, according the US State Department, the most active cell of the terror network in the world, has strengthened its foothold in the southern provinces of the country, apparently taking an advantage of the distracted government.
Yemen is a vital ally of the west in its war against terrorism, however cooperation between them has been disrupted due to the current political turmoil in the country, leading US to intensify its drone raids on al-Qaeda hideouts and convoys.
U.S managed to kill high-ranking al-Qaeda militants in Yemen, including the notorious American-Yemeni cleric Anwar Awlaqi, who was killed last year by US drone.

During the time of the revolution in Yemen the Houthis took the opportunity to seige Dammaj where the Dar al-Hadith Islamic Centre is located. This centre is a salafi one and has been a thorn in the Houthi side for some time.
The Houthis claim to be fighting to reinstate an Islamic state, but a Shiah Islamic state something like what existed before the last revolution in Yemen which saw the demise of the Shiah Imam Ahmad.
The fighting is still going on in Saada, Hajja, Amran provinces and also there have been some lesser reports from al-Jawf. The list of students killed by Houthis when the centre was seiged reached more than 80. Of course the Houthis claim that the Salafis started it.

Could you imagine a Sunni group going around and fighting state governments, beseiging Islamic centres and killing in order to establish an Islamic state? What would happen to them? We know the answer to that - the American would send some cruise missiles to upset the party. So how are these Houthis going about doing what they are doing and not attracting any missiles?
The counter to Houthi aggression was prompt with fatawat coming from ulema in Saudia Arabia as well as in Yemen calling for defensive jihad against the houthis. All the Salafi centres sent fighters to help liberate Dammaj.

Shia'ah Scourge in Yemen
More and more I am crashing into Shiah dawa. That and the Jihad that is being fought right now between the Shiah Houthis and the Salafis especially around the Islamic Centre 'Dar al-Hadith' in Dammaj has prompted me to write something about it because it is a growing problem that seems to be going unnoticed or if noticed ignored by a large portion of Ahlul-Sunnah.
TO save time, here is a wikipaedia link all about the Shiah wars in the North of Yemen.

In the coming blog I will report on the stuff that isnt in the media, or at least not the English Media.

Yemen: Beware of Saleh’s Plan B
Hakim Almasmari
With the historical presidential elections only days away, President Saleh is still hoping the ball of luck turns in his favor. His goal now: work on canceling the February 21 presidential elections.
Vice President Abdurabu Hadi insists on coming to power through the ballot boxes as it will give him more legitimacy domestically and internationally.
Saleh’s plan: that Hadi be chosen president through a vote from parliament and Shoura Council.
The trick to all of this, Hadi will in reality lack the power of a real president as he never really got the vote of the people, and Saleh would still be the last elected president of Yemen, even if he leaves office.
Let’s not forget that the majority in parliament is still controlled by Saleh’s ruling party, and they have the ability to keep Saleh in power by rejecting Hadi’s bid for presidency in a parliament vote.
These options were brought up by the ruling family to senior aides, though they know that the international community will reject any derail in power transfer and sanction will hit Saleh and his aides.
Though Yemen’s one man election makes no sense, only it can ensure that Saleh’s era in power comes to an end. President Saleh has realized that it’s game over when it comes to him, however, he will take his chances seeking to keep his family in control of Yemen, even if it means doing so indirectly, at least until they reorganize their cards.
Controlling Yemen does not necessarily mean being president, but rather controlling the military and security forces, and this is what Saleh’s family currenly has and will die for.
Just three years ago, President Saleh was talking about his family’s future and turning their rule into a family kingdom like other neighbors in the region.
The ruling family was not shy to say that they seek to build the “Al Saleh Kingdom.”
I might sound crazy, but who said that the law prevails in Yemen.
Everything is possible in a country that lacks basic institutional infrastructure, and Yemen tops that list.
Let’s wait and see where Yemen’s train for change will be heading.
Hakim Almasmari is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Yemen Post Newspaper. Mr. Almasmari is also a university lecturer in the field of international media. He is a political analyst who has been a guest on many international TV stations discussing current local and international affairs. He is based in Sana'a, Yemen. Occasionally, he is also based in the Yemen Post's United States office.
